Ian McNicol
Artist Statement
Art is the process of wanting. It is the discovery of little truths from common experience. Art is entirely human, and a reflection of the things we see and feel every day. The more one observes life the fewer answers there are to be found; the questions merely grow deeper.
I believe the end result is that art is never fully black and white, but all the gray area in-between. It is a series of puzzles and mysteries we can explore, but never fully solve.
Biography
Ian McNicol is a Portland based artist specializing in sculpture and mixed-media. He has over ten years of experience creating art in materials as diverse as stainless steel, cast polymer resin, reclaimed wood, found objects, and paint. Ian has been represented by Gallery 7126, Ltd. since 2002 when the gallery first opened.
Ian has created work that is small and intimate, and has also been involved in many large scale public works as assistant to sculptor Bruce West. He takes inspiration from the environment—both urban and natural, as well as from human behavior and interaction.
Ian also makes hand-built electronic and acoustic instruments, and has been building electric guitars since he was fifteen. He is currently working on a series of electric ukuleles. Ian is a native Oregonian, and currently lives in the Portland area with his wife, son, and a cat who knows no fear.
