From as far back as I can remember I have enjoyed putting different patterns together. In the early 1990s I went to an Obon festival in Portland and I was hooked forever on the Japanese artistry of color and pattern and texture.
In this Asian series, I gave myself complete permission to explore all the methods available to me to exemplify this passion to create this way. I incorporated old woodblock prints that I have archivally reproduced onto rice paper and embellished, antique calligraphy—wormholes and all, found and purchased papers and antique kimono pieces.
No piece starts with a plan—just a desire to enjoy the color and texture and layer upon layer to create interest and depth. I recently traveled to Japan and, though brief, the trip gave me such inspiration to continue working in this fashion. I hope you enjoy my joy!
